Welcome to Washington Elementary School!
Washington Elementary School has a rich heritage rooted deeply in the tradition and excellence of the Altus Schools. The school currently occupies the same ground where the first Altus school was located in the late 1800's. The original cornerstone of the Old Leger School built in 1904 is still present at the entrance to Washington. We want to make you and your child a proud part of that history.
Our theme for the coming year is "Washington Strong". With our dedicated staff, and high standards Washington's goal is to be a place where each student excels to his/her potential.
Washington has a faculty and staff excited about working with your child. Washington offers a well-rounded curriculum with emphasis in the areas of reading and math to maximize the educational achievements of our students. Instruction is enhanced through the use of technology such as smart boards in each classroom and a computer lab with state of the are computers. As well, all children grades kindergarten through fourth grade have the opportunity to participate in music and physical education classes. Pre-Kindergarten students will experience music and p.e. in their classroom environment. Our school Library has a circulation system that is completely automated with a variety of books and materials.
Washington Elementary received recognition as a "Great Expectations" Model School for the past four years. This program emphasizes quality research instruction and creating a caring and learner-focused climate. As well, Washington continues to be a pilot site for the Response to Intervention process for the state of Oklahoma. RTI is about matching students' needs with high-quality researched based educational practices and interventions, and measuring student progress and performance to make the best educational decisions for all students.
You can help your child succeed by becoming involved in your child's education and school. I invite you to become and active member of our Washington Booster Organization. Serve as a school volunteer, attend Parent-Teacher Conferences, and become a room parent. Your participation will play an important role in you child's educational career.
Once again, welcome to Washington. Working together as parents and educators, we can make your student's years at Washington some of the most successful of their school career.
